Shopping in Bangkok can be a double-edged sword. It can be fun and a headache at the same time. Sure, there are a lot of great deals to be found and in any nook and cranny. One of the reasons why I wrote this blog is to give you the ins and outs of shopping in Bangkok. From the upwardly trendy upscale shopping centers to lifestyle community malls and to the crazy Bangkok streets, this rough guide in pictures gives you the lowdown in maneuvering your way to glorious shopping pleasure.
Bangkok is indeed a shopping mecca. 1. Pratunam Shopping District
Start with something chaotic and crazy. And nothing can be as authentic a Bangkok shopping experience as elbow-to-elbow shopping with the crowds at the ubiquitous Pratunam district. This area spans the whole areas of Petchaburi (where the popular Platinum Mall and nearby big shopping malls are located), Baiyoke and Indra shopping areas where wholesalers, small shop owners, tourists and local shoppers converge.
2. Central World
This ranks high among Bangkokian's favorite shopping malls for its design and variety. Conveniently located in the Ratchaprasong intersection, this shopping behemoth offers a wide range of clothes, shoes and accessories from quality Thai fashion brands to more luxury international designer brands.
3. Chatuchak Market (or JJ Market)
This is one of the world's largest weekend markets with over 15,000 stores in a massive shopping location. Young, up-and-coming Thai designers, Thai university students usually put up shop in this weekend market to test run their designs and also make a decent living. As this open market is only open on weekends, it gives locals and tourists a certain scarcity factor that makes it something to mark your calendar for on weekends.
